In considering painting I believe that one must first consider how meanings invested in a painting. The methods employed by artists are the symbolic structures used for denotation. It is not enough, as Nelson Goodman points out, simply to say that a painting represents a person or thing because it resembles that person or thing; after  all, again, in Goodman's words, "cars resemble each other but rarely represent other cars" What my work focuses on is the odd and not well understood dynamic of symbol manipulation. It is extremely complicated and yet we perform the function of reading a painting with great ease. This tension is interesting to me . I agree with Gombrich that painting is experimentation.
